Lead with Vision, Not Imitation

Let’s get straight to it.

Your business thrives when you ignore your competitors.

Yes, you heard me. Ignore them.

Before you call me a dreamer, hear me out.

What’s in the market now, was planned a year ago (or more). Let it influence you too much, and you’re looking backward.

Here’s why that’s a problem:

  1. Copying competitors: Mimic others—including your past self—and you’re always playing catch-up.

  2. Fear of missing out: Trends shift, but your unique path forward is timeless.

  3. Tunnel vision: Focusing on rivals blinds you to new opportunities for your customer.

I’ve fallen into these traps. It’s hard not to.

But my best work has always come from a leadership mindset.

“The battle is no longer between companies, says Marty Neumeier, “but between the people who buy from them.”

Said another way, your customers shape your company’s future. The brand with the best customer wins.

Here’s how to lead:

  1. Be You: Blaze your trail. Stick to your values.

  2. Connect with your tribe: Help customers find their meaning.

  3. Create, don’t imitate: Innovate without fear.

So, find that sweet spot between who you are and what your customers love.

Create with confidence, even if you’re behind.

Soon, you’ll be setting the pace.

No need to look back!
